Martin Mosaic Toque

Toddler and Adult Small sizes

I designed this toque during my first winter in Martin, UK. The winters are a lot milder than those back home in Canada and a lighter weight hat is quite nice. I designed this using DK yarn as it is much more available in the UK than back home where worsted weight is the standard.

The pattern would work fine with worsted weight, but your sizing might be a little off. A thinner worsted weight would work well. In fact, in my toddler size trial, I mixed the Stylecraft Special DK with Lion Brand Ferris Wheel which is a rather thin worsted.

The pattern is written in 4 sizes but only the adult small is available for free on my blog and with less tips and photos. If you’d like to support me in my designing, consider purchasing the pdf from my Ravelry shop.

Band detail

Hat Band – Use 4mm Hook – Colour A

Sizing Note: It is easy to alter the thickness of the band by working more or less in the foundation row. A thicker band can easily be folded up on the finished hat. Ensure that the first and last stitches are through both loops to have a neater edge. [Final stitch count is written in square brackets].

R1: (If your stitches are too tight, you might want to use a 5mm hook for this round alone)
fsc 11. [11]

R2:
ch 2, turn, esc, esc BLO 9, esc. [11]

R3 60:
repeat R2 [11]

Join – sl st to R1, making the middle stitches BLO like in pattern. Do not fasten off. Turn band inside out so that sl st is on the inside.

slip stitch the band together

Hat Body- Use 5mm Hook – Colours A, B (C, D, E, F)

The mosaic chart starts with R1. R0 is the joining row between the band and the body and is worked in the colour of the band. You can change colour however often you like. I designed the hat with 6 colours in mind, but it works very well with 2, especially with one being a gradient. Change colour just after the invisible join so that all colour changes happen on the inside only.
